When Justin Nelson, a graduate from Tufts University in 1998, sought an internship in the finance
industry as a junior, he faced numerous challenges. The Tufts Financial Network, an indispensable resource for students eyeing
finance careers, had not yet been established. Despite the absence of on-campus
recruitment from firms like JP Morgan, Nelson’s determination and connections
led him to secure a web developer internship at the financial giant. His
impressive performance landed him a full-time role post-graduation.
Nelson’s journey at JP Morgan saw him rise to the rank of managing director in the asset management
division. This ascent, however, was marked by a desire to aid fellow Tufts
students in securing similar opportunities.
In 2006, Justin Nelson embarked on a mission to transform Tufts into a core
recruiting school for JP Morgan’s asset management group. This initiative would
ensure sustained engagement between the firm and the university, providing
students with valuable entry points into the finance sector.
Initially, Justin Nelson’s efforts were a solitary endeavor. He managed everything from travel logistics
to meeting arrangements without the typical support given to representatives
from core schools. Despite these challenges, his persistence paid off. By 2009,
Tufts had officially become a core school for JP Morgan, and Nelson had
successfully facilitated internships and job placements for 20 Tufts graduates
in the firm’s asset management division.
One such success story is Jon Trott, a 2010 economics graduate who, with Nelson’s support,
secured an internship during the challenging post-financial crisis period.
Trott’s subsequent full-time role at JP Morgan exemplifies the impact of
Nelson’s contributions.
Today, Justin Nelson remains actively involved in recruiting Tufts students to JP Morgan. His
dedication has fostered a robust network of Tufts alumni within the firm, all
contributing to a legacy of mutual support and professional development.
Nelson’s efforts have not only benefited individual careers but also
strengthened the ties between Tufts University and the financial industry. See related
