Some executives spend a career climbing toward distance from daily operations. Michael Polk Newell Brands spent his second act closing that distance. After running Newell Brands, where his portfolio touched millions of households through kitchenware and outdoor gear, Polk retired in 2019. A year later he resurfaced as chief executive of Implus LLC, a privately held fitness accessories company owned by Berkshire Partners.
The change in scale came with a change in posture. Michael Polk has said that during his years running a large public company, much of his attention went toward allocating resources and pushing decisions through several layers of management before they reached the people carrying them out. Implus LLC, with its sixteen brands and global footprint but far smaller headcount, offered a different way of working.
Learning by Doing
Polk arrived at Implus just as the pandemic began reshaping how consumer goods companies operated. He spent his first stretch there rebuilding parts of the operating model and shoring up financial performance rather than easing into the role gradually. He has since pointed to that period as proof that private companies push people to grow quickly, simply because there are fewer people to absorb the workload.
That dynamic extends beyond the executive suite. Polk has argued that employees at smaller companies take on responsibility earlier in their careers than they would at a larger firm, learning through direct exposure to sourcing, manufacturing and retailer relationships rather than through formal development programs. He sees this as a fair trade for the reduced resources that come with running a private business.
Polk’s own career, which began at Kraft Foods and Unilever before Newell Brands, gave him decades of experience with the layered management he now largely avoids. At Implus, he has said, he gets to work directly alongside his team on the choices that move the business forward, a shift he describes as one of the more satisfying turns of his professional life.
