The Howard DNA Project if open to all males with the Howard surname (as well as variable spellings).
The DNA Project has had some surprising results. In the beginning there were high hopes that we would be able to trace many lines back to their immigrant ancestor and then back to England. That has not turned out to be the case.
There does not seem to be the same amount of interest in England’s Howards as there is elsewhere in the world, so there are very few Howards to compare DNA with.
There are several genealogies I have not yet put on the DNA pages. If you were one of those I missed please let me know. My web provider has updated their programs and hopefully it will be easier to upgrade pages instead of the whole website.
Obediah was thought to be a brother of Nehemiah and descended from Edmund Howard, above. We do not yet have any descendents of Nehemiah testing, but Obediah does not match with Edmund. In fact, we now know Obediah is closely related to Seth Howard of Craven/Jones Counties, NC and Edward Howard of New Bern, NC.
Some of Edward’s descendents claim he arrived in NC with the Kennedy and Henderson families in 1728. It is not known where he came from, but he married a Sarah or Sabrah Jarrett before 1735 in NC. Obediah and Seth both have similar names in their ancestry; including Jarrett/Jared which makes me wonder if they may have been other sons of Edward. Only further research or DNA results can answer this question.
Mathew Howard of VA/MD has several matches, but all from the same family, which is not enough for a firm confirmation of descendence. A participant whose paper trail led to Mathew shows no match at all. We have tentatively matched that Howard as a descendent of Joshua of Baltimore, MD, since there were some of Joshua’s descendents in the same area. Another Howard thought by some to be a descendent of Mathew was Benjamin who married Prudence Sater of Maryland. Unfortunately, Benjamin Howard does not show a connection to any other Howards tested, neither does John Howard of York Co., VA, or William Howard of Ocracoke Island, NC.
