“Simple Genius” by David Baldacci

June 18th, 2008

Simple Genius is a very complex, rough and tumble mystery featuring two ex-government agents whose lives are spiralling out of control. Michelle Maxwell baits the biggest, scariest man in a bar in the worst part of town to a brawl and ends up in a hospital, handcuffed to the bed. Her partner, Sean King, uses the last of their funds to pay off the man she fought and she reluctantly agrees to check herself into a psychiatric facility.

With no money coming in and expenses rising, Sean goes to work for his ex-girlfriend, whose business brings in such dangerous jobs that he can make the money he needs in a short period of time, if he can stay alive. A great book for the more serious reader. Check this book out at Karen’s Store.

Last Known Victim by Erica Spindler

June 18th, 2008

Last Known Victim is set in post-Katrina New Orleans around the families of Stacy Killian, Spencer Malone and the Malone family. Spencer’s aunt is the captain of the New Orleans police department whose husband was murdered during the storm. The murder was linked to a serial killer of women who seems to have returned after a two year hiatus. Lite romance and plenty of mystery, while giving us a firsthand look at some of the hardships faced even two years after the hurricane.

I have not read any Erica Spindler mysteries, but I found this to be definitely a good read, with a can’t put it down finale and the added bonus of repeat characters. Check this book out at Karen’s Store.

“Obsession” by Jonathan Kellerman

June 18th, 2008

Kellerman has always been one of my favorite writers, and his repeat characters, Dr. Alex Delaware, a child psychologist and Milo Sturgis, a gay LAPD detective once again team up in Obsession to help a former patient.

Brought to Delaware when she was seven years old by her aunt, who had adopted her; she was now looking for help. Her aunt, Tonya Bigelow, claims to have killed a man. Their search to discover whether the confession had been caused by her illness, drugs, or an actual murder makes for great reading. Check this book out at Karen’s Store.

“Hemlock Bay” by Catherine Coulter

June 18th, 2008

Hemlock Bay is one of a series of books featuring FBI Special Agent Dillon Savich and his hand-picked group of special agents, each with their own special talent. I became hooked on these books a few years ago and am always on the lookout for a new one.

This book, written circa 2001, features Dillon and his wife and FBI partner, Sherlock, and Dillon’s sister, who is suspected of trying to commit suicide. Until the paintings left by her grandmother enter the picture. The book has romance and danger, with a good does of the supernatural thrown in for an exciting adventure. Check out this book at Karen’s Store.

“Hard Evidence” by Barbara D’Amato

June 18th, 2008

I picked this book up at the library recently because a friend had mentioned an author who wrote good “lite” mysteries around food themes, with some great recipes sprinkled thorughout. It didn’t really sound like my kind of mystery but, to my surprise, I really enjoyed it.

Her character, Cat Marsalla, goes undercover in an upscale food store when a bone she picks up for a dog she is sitting ends up being human. In addition to an excellent mystery, there were fun jokes and interesting information about choosing and cooking with olive oil. Check out the book at Karen’s Store

Robert “Bob” Howard b. 18 Mar 1910

May 20th, 2008

Does anyone have information on Robert Howard who says he was born in Bethlehem, PA, 18 Mar 1910. They might have been burned out in a fire. His parents both passed away in a wreck in PA, he was placed in an orphanage and ran away, eventually joining the military. He met Thelma Myrtle Gawen at the Hayadams Hotel on 15th and Penn in DC (where he received his SS card) and married her about 1937. She was b. 25 June 1917 in Cople, Westmoreland Co., VA and died 24 July 1999. She and Robert had three children, one born in Lackawanna, NY, the other two may have been born in DC. SS records show he signed up in the District of Columbia. He was in the Electrician’s Union and worked in DC and at Calvert Cliffs in MD for a while. Any information would be appreciated.

12-Marker Matches

May 7th, 2008

Several months ago I came across 12-Marker matches which did not continue to match when they were upgraded to a higher number of markers. At about the same time we got the results back for Gideon Howard and his descendents, several were named after his son, Reason/Rezon. One of these sons did not match Gideon, nor some of the others in the group, but it appeared there was a fast moving marker that had also changed on one of the earlier Reason’s and because he was a close match with him, we could figure that he was also a descendent of Gideon.

I am beginning to see more of these groups and plan to post them as matches even though they are not listed as such on the FTDNA site, just to make sure we do not miss a possible intermediate connection.

Benjamin Howard & Prudence Sater

May 7th, 2008

I have always wondered how Benjamin Howard and Prudence Sater met, especially since Prudence Sater’s mother is suposed to have married a John Howard, which is the last information I have been able to find on her. Was she allowed to raise her children or were they placed under the care of someone else? Who was John Howard? Did he have any children, brothers, sisters, parents in the area. Where did they live? It is claimed that Benjamin Howard was born on Long Island, but there has been no indication of where this was; New York? Scotland? Long Island of Holston, VA? Of North Carolina? It was at one time thought he was a descendent of Mathew Howard of VA/MD because of a connection to Thomas Arundel Howard, and yes, there was a connection; but that left the question of who Thomas Arundel Howard was…not a descendent of Mathew Arundel and Margaret Howard, though they were cousins. I am writing a book, but I have not been able to place the parents, etc of Benjamin Howard, which would clear up some questions which badly need answering.

It is said that Benjamin Howard went back to his ancestral home and found a deed for 4000 acres. I have also read that this deed was in the possession of the Walker family which later married into Benjamin’s family. It could be true that the Walker’s had the deed, because there was a Walker in a prominant position with the ancestral Howard. There is more than a hundred years between the time the deed was written and Benjamin’s birth, and another 40-60 years before it was used to get a land grant in Tennessee. Where was the deed in all that time?

I would love to hear from anyone who has any information on this family.
